Jacobus (Co) Westerik was a Dutch painter who trained at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague.
In 1953 and 1954, he was awarded the Royal Grant for Painting. This unleashed a flood of positive and also negative publicity. Despite the latter, his work was acquired by several museums, including the Kunstmuseum Den Haag, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen Rotterdam. He was also loved by private collectors.
Westerik’s work has been part of many major international exhibitions including the Venice Biennale (1962 and 1982), the Paris Biennales (1959 and 1985) and the São Paulo Biennale (1965). A year after his death, Sadie Coles organized an exhibition of his work in London (renowned art gallery).
