His work combines symbolism with sharp social criticism. Rops was friends with several literary figures, including Charles Baudelaire.<\/p>\n<p>With<em data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"42\" data-is-only-node=\"\"> Mam&#8217;zelle Gavroche et la po\u00e9sie \u00e9rotique<\/em> Rops demonstrates his fascination with female independence and erotic expression. The figure Mam&#8217;zelle Gavroche, a bold, free young woman, embodies the Parisian esprit and rebellious energy of the 19th century. Combined with poetic lyrics full of ambiguity and desire, he creates a tantalizing commentary on gender, sexuality and social conventions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"7\" data-list-defn-props=\"{\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Image: a heliogravure of Mlle.
