Caspar Philips Jacobszoon (1732 – 1789) was a Dutch surveyor and engraver. He engaged in engraving work throughout his life, mostly in the architectural field.
This beautiful large and beautifully colored copper engraving is after a drawing by Jan de Beijer (1703 – 1780). Edited by Isaak Tirion. The image shows the town of Wijk bij Duurstede, located on the Rhine River, and offers a panoramic view of the town from the river. The engraving captures the city with its distinctive tower of St. John’s Church, the waterfront, and various ships sailing along the Rhine. These ships symbolize the trade and economic importance of Wijk bij Duurstede, which at that time held an important position along the Rhine, a crucial trade route in the Golden Age.
