Blaeu war ein niederl\u00e4ndischer Kartograph und Weltreisender. Um Verwechslungen mit seinem Nachbarn\/Konkurrenten Janssonius zu vermeiden, f\u00fcgte er um 1621 seinem Namen Willem Jansz den Zusatz Blaeu hinzu. Zusammen mit seinem Sohn Joan Blaeu geh\u00f6rt Willem zu den ber\u00fchmtesten Kartographen der Welt.<\/p>\n<p>Sein erster Atlas wurde 1631 mit rund 60 Karten und Begleittexten ver\u00f6ffentlicht. Von diesen 60 Karten waren 13 zuvor von Blaeu ver\u00f6ffentlicht worden. Das unter dem Titel <em>Appendix<\/em> bekannte Werk war als Erg\u00e4nzung zu den bereits bekannten Atlanten von Ortelius und Mercator gedacht. Diese Ausgabe kann als zweiter Ansto\u00df f\u00fcr den erbitterten Wettbewerb zwischen der Firma Blaeu und der Firma Hondius\/Janssonius gesehen werden.<\/p>\n<p>Nach dem Tod von Willem Jansz. wurde der Atlas weiter entwickelt. Dieser Atlas (bekannt als Atlas Maior, Grooten Atlas oder Geographiae Blavianae) wurde im 17. Jahrhundert zu einer der gr\u00f6\u00dften und teuersten Ausgaben auf dem Gebiet der Kartografie.
