Nach Gerardus Mercator war er der gr\u00f6\u00dfte Geograph seiner Zeit und Erfinder des modernen Atlasses. Im Jahr 1570 ver\u00f6ffentlichte er sein einflussreichstes Werk, den Weltatlas <em>Theatrum Orbis Terrarum<\/em> in sieben Sprachen und 36 Auflagen.<\/p>\n<p>Dieser Atlas enthielt fast keine eigenen Karten, sondern stellte 53 Karten von anderen mit Quellenangaben zusammen. Ortelius lie\u00df alle Karten f\u00fcr diesen Atlas in gleichem Stil und Format auf Kupferplatten stechen, logisch geordnet nach Kontinent, Region und Staat. Ortelius versah die Karten au\u00dferdem mit einem beschreibenden Kommentar und Querverweisen auf der R\u00fcckseite. So wurde zum ersten Mal das gesamte westeurop\u00e4ische Wissen \u00fcber die Welt in einem Buch zusammengefasst.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Illustration: eine sch\u00f6ne und sehr dekorative Karte der Provinz
